It was a very sunny away day in Dartford as the Pilgrims faced relegation‑threatened Burnt Ash. A lively home crowd of four men and a crate of Kopparberg Cider set the scene — and it was immediately clear we were in for a spirited afternoon.
The Pilgrims controlled the first half with confidence. Burnt Ash sat deep, keeping all eleven players behind the ball and relying on the occasional counterattack for momentum.
This defensive mindset played into Pilgrims’ hands, with Morgan and Oli repeatedly driving through midfield and distributing well to create chances. Despite carving out three or four clear opportunities, the breakthrough remained elusive, and the teams went into halftime locked at 0–0.
The second half brought a more determined Burnt Ash side, applying greater pressure and testing the Pilgrims’ defence more than before. Still the Pilgrims provided composed tackling, strong distribution and disciplined structure which kept most threats at bay.
Burnt Ash benefited from the luxury of fresh legs from the side-line, whereas the Pilgrims—traveling as a tight squad of twelve—were beginning to feel the heat.
The deadlock was finally broken when Burnt Ash were awarded a 50/50 penalty flick. Rea produced an excellent save, but amid the resulting scramble, the ball was ruled to have got stuck under the keeper.
Chasing the game late on, the Pilgrims pushed hard but fatigue and rising tempers took their toll. After a confrontation sparked by Burnt Ash a Pilgrims player reacted and both were shown cards, leaving both sides to see out the final ten minutes with ten men.
Despite the setback, the Pilgrims stayed organised and fought to the final whistle, but the single goal proved decisive.
