Friars v Holcombe Hurricanes lived up to their name – We woz blown away! (boom boom!)
It was certainly not a good day at the office for the Friars facing a much younger and faster team. A goal was conceded early in the first half and then for regular, almost metronomic, intervals throughout. The Friars never really got into gear and were either chasing shadows or not passing the ball accurately. They never did give up with everyone putting in a shift. Apart from the seven goals conceded there were some amazing saves from Trigger in goal and no blame for the scoreline should be attributed to him. The only time the Friars got on the scoresheet was for cards…..their frustration resulting in two somewhat unfortunate ones the first being a poor tackle by the scribbler (Hayward) and the second was awarded to Cllr Alex for encouraging the umpire too vociferously that he should award a short corner to Holcombe on grounds of safety, which he eventually did, with the ball stuck underneath Trigger – a bizarre delay.
The Dowling brothers as they do (see pic of Phil), along with Merve the Swerve in mid field did their best but a difficult afternoon for all, especially for our defence of Mike, Geoff, Biggles & Alex.
Geoff Philpot marked a Holcombe player who felt he needed to sit on the baseline all game. This guy touched the ball four times and scored twice so somewhat of a waste of an afternoon for him in the shadow of Geoff. Merve The Swerve felt he should’ve been on the Teamo score sheet but also for a card and he made this clear to your writer so gets in the report!
Look forward to Folkestone next week, another team with young legs and hopefully not a repeat performance.
