The day started with what I can only assume was a rousing and motivational speech by our captain. Full of inspiring metaphors and a tactical master class that Pep Guardiola himself would have been proud of. I’m only assuming this because I was a few (and maybe some more) minutes late to the arranged meet time so missed it, hence me writing this match report.
Canterbury started the game with good posession, moving the ball around the back and working it up the wings, creating chances and winning short corners. However, Canterbury were unable to capitilase.
Unfortunately, Herne bay were able to make the most of a counter attack after the breakdown of a Canterbury short corner and go 1-0 up.
This didn’t dishearten the Canterbury players as they managed to get a swift equaliser through a good finish from Kortlang. Going into half time 1-1.
After a an encouraging team talk, Canterbury started the second half strong getting a quick goal from a cracking volley from Ben Hare at the back post. 2-1 Canterbury.
Herne Bay were allowed to grow back into the game as Canterbury were sloppy in possession and gave away some unnecessary short corners. Herne bay were able to make the most of this and score a rather fortuitous short corner goal off Coombsy’s foot who was stood outside the goal and diverted past the Canterbury keeper. The reassuring words of “I couldn’t see anything” from your postman is what you want to hear…
Herne Bay won another late short corner which was well finished, making the score 3-2 to the visitors.
This was a tough result for Canterbury, with some good spells in the game, but ultimately unable to finish off chances, make use of short corners, and too many unforced errors.
Well done to Oli Coope for a MOM performance, attacking with pace and purpose. Commiserations to the DOD Matthew Ratcliff who needs a new alarm clock.
The Grims are away next week to Gore Court, hoping to get some points on the board and start working our way up the league table.
