With some strong performances in the pre-season, the grims were looking to start off the season with a bang. With some of the younger players turning up with a ‘headache’ after Friday night antics, a sluggish warm-up ensued. Despite that, Canterbury started brightly, carving out several early chances but failing to convert. Folkestone capitalised on defensive lapses, punishing Canterbury with two goals before the break. But the grims weren’t deterred, and as the pressure mounted for Folkestone, Simon Bucks put one in the net. We were back in it. With a new determination, Canterbury kept pushing, but with a couple rogue challenges from Freddie McMullan sending the Folkestone opposition flying, 2 yellow cards were sent his way. Despite only having 9 men on the field with Tommy Rodgers joining the sin bin, in the dying seconds, George White’s reverse flick slid agonisingly past the far post, and the final whistle confirmed a narrow 2–1 defeat. Not to be disheartened, the post match talk was optimistic, with exciting things waiting for the grims this season.
