And off we go for a new season….finishing last season bang on mid table that is the summit of our ambitions for this season.

Some regular faces were expected to turn out on the pitch (or at least Teamo said so!) and off the pitch partake of Gadds but we woz plundered overnight; Trigger to The Squires, Sir Geoffrey and Biggles to the 10s and vice captain Hurlow laid low in Littlebourne by a mystery bug. Cap’n Jonesy had to work hard to sort!

Still, it was what it was and with heroic Pete Ratty Ratcliffe donning his Michelin Man kit to GK off we went.
After 15 mins Bert Andrews from John Boy Aikin (for it is he!) who had received a pass from one of the Dowling bros struck a nice team goal with your writer looking on uselessly.

Half time saw us still in the lead with Ratty keeping out a few along with the stalwart defence of Barton and Harris and some firm hits from Alex Ricketts and good midfield play from both Phil and Guy Dowling. There were a few misses from the Friars forwards but at least opportunities were created.

Into the second half with Bexley stepping up trying to obtain the equaliser, which low and behold they achieved. So at 1-1 it was all to play for with Merv Lewis showing his fitness weaving in and out putting in a great shift. There were some big hits coming from our defence which Bexley heralded whenever Ricketts got the ball with “there’s a Rocket coming”.

Young Tim Lewis playing his first game for the Squires battled well on the left wing whilst Dad had a little “enforced rest” for chatting too much – a difference of opinion about back sticks! Bexley saw their opportunity but our defence was resolute and a match played in excellent spirit ended all square!

Squad: John Aikin, Bert Andrews, Mike Barton, Guy Dowling, Phil Dowling, Jamie Harris, Geordie Hayward, Tony Jones(C), Mervyn Lewis, Tim Lewis, Pete Ratcliffe (GK), Cllr Alex ‘Rocket’ Ricketts
