With thanks to team sponsor MFri
With the opposition turning up with their sponsors logo emblazoned on their shirts – no less than Specsavers – there was hope in the Friars camp. This was dashed when in warm up John Boy Aikin smashed a ball into Trigger’s ankle. With rumours of Trigger unable to play and Jonesy having to keep, the Folkestone skipper came over to commiserate (yeh!) but then Trigger heroically recovered. Jonesy decided to save his body for the Ash Panto next weekend (tickets available for Peter Pan at £7.50 but selling fast) and just manage his intrepid bunch of 13 along with official Manager Phil Dowling from the bench.
Anyway onto the hockey and it was somewhat a case of men vs boys with the boys running well drilled rings round the Friars initially but with some occasional Friars forays and an agonising miss in front of goal from work horse Bert Andrews. There were 2 short corners for The Friars which also went wide.
So Folkestone were 2-0 up at half time and whilst there were a couple of further scoring opportunities Trigger had to be in scintillating form and he was with some outstanding saves but well supported by Philpott & Ricketts.
The second half saw lots more Folkestone running but with bright spots again from Bert Andrews though the best opportunity was a solo run from Springbok Jarryd Ramdunnie which should have resulted in a goal but the pass somehow didn’t materialize to young Angus!
A bit of frustration set in in the last 5 minutes as a green card for James Blackburn for a back stick that any defender would have been proud of and which your scribbler didn’t even notice but the manager said he saw coming from a minute away and a final excellent goal from Folkestone.
Thanks to Adam and Kevin for umpiring a match played in excellent spirit with Folkestone worthy winners. Next match is the Ash Panto with 22 Friars groupies attending to see Jonesy as Tinkerbell – goodness knows how we will play away at Blackheath the next day!
