Throughout history, the rivalry between England and Scotland has given us some of the most dramatic and hard-fought battles: from the Wars of Scottish Independence to the Rough Wooing. To that long list of conflicts, we can now add the Polo Wayfarers Fracas of 2024, though this time, it was the English standing firm on home soil.
There was no bloody scene like Stirling Bridge, nor a Braveheart moment at Bannockburn. You won’t find Mel Gibson wading into this tale with a sword and wild hair.
The first breakthrough came not from a cunning tactical manoeuvre, but from a brief lapse on our part. One pass was all it took for the Wayfarers to pounce, their forward slipping through our lines and finding the net. 1-0 to the visitors, though undeserved.
“Don’t turn your back!” was the rallying cry from the sidelines. However, like the Scottish rebels who caught Edward’s men off guard at Stirling Bridge, the Wayfarers found another moment of fortune. A swift attack saw them double their lead. 2-0, and once again we were left chasing the game.
The 2-0 scoreline did little to reflect the grit and determination of the team, who fought like the very best of England’s finest. While we may not have won this particular encounter, our performance was nothing short of courageous, a fact not lost on those gathered on the sidelines.
Though the Polo Wayfarers Fracas didn’t go our way, we leave the field knowing this was just one skirmish in a much larger campaign. We will regroup, just as England has done throughout history, and we’ll march forward into the next battle with renewed determination.
The newly instated COW (Canterbury Outstanding Warrior) award was hotly contested, with the decision coming down to a voting process that even a medieval parliament would struggle to understand. In the end, four votes were enough to crown our winner. One player shone brighter than all the rest. Emma Reid, our very own star, earned the Player of the Match award.
