The pilgrims went on their first pilgrimage of the season with a trip away to Maidstone 1s. This fixture still evokes feelings of PTSD for many of the Grims who were crucified in the same match last season – 10-3! The team talk touched on many things one being that, Maidstone were likely to be well drilled and fit and as the game started this became very clear to the grims starting midfield whose combined age was 121.
Credit where it’s due it was pretty even throughout the first half. The grims couldn’t match Maidstone for hitting the ball down the line or shouting but we probably matched them for circle penetration’s. Shots on goal ? a close second. Their goal mouth chances were made to look a bit more dramatic as they seemed to prefer the theatrical slide in at the back post. Anyway half time nil nil.
Second half the game got a bit too open for the grims liking. Maidstone were getting on the base line with alarming regularity and eventually one of the crosses was met and dispatched past Brad. 1-0. Annoyingly this happened again about 5 minutes later. 2-0. Then the game plateaued for little while. Aaron Hudson sprayed the ball around the back nicely. Jack Parker redeemed himself with a man of the match performance at right half with a few nut meg chuck and runs. Made to look all the more impressive with his Andie McDowell L’Oréal because I’m worth it curls bouncing along with him. Hursty probably had a few half chances and Simon Buckingham had some nice touches ( please pick me). Then Maidstone scored again making the final score was 3-0. Many positives to take away. Lots to build on. Up the Grims!
