Dear Diary,
Week 2 of the 2024/25 season and we’ve already hit derby day. With social media naming it as the “Ladies match of the week”, we knew the stakes were high.
With Haighy giving us an interactive tactic talk using Subbuteo (some younger players (and Jina) had 0 clue as to what this game was) the Ladies 2’s were pumped and ready to go.
The crowd was bustling but still no sign of man and dog. Not ones to be disheartened by the lack of man and dog, we went into the half time talk with a score of 0-0. Haighy calmly gave us some skilful and thorough pointers. Becs, on the other hand, got straight to the point and raised her voice (promise we were brave and didn’t cry).
Having failed this simple instruction of “score in the first 11 seconds” in the first half, the second half looked promising with us gaining a short corner in the first 10 seconds. Alas. At this point in the game we could not follow the simple instruction of “score a goal”. Determined and focused to not let coach down the 2’s continued to battle and were rewarded with a lovely strike from EJ which was slotted home by Chirpy. 1-0 to the 2’s. Eager to continue the hustle, Becca added goal number 2 moments later, with a stunning run into the D and a lovely shot into the net. Keen to join the scoreboard, a scramble in front of the keeper meant the ball fell to EJ, who slotted the ball into the back netting. 3-0.
Some build up play from the midfield meant the ball was driven down the left hand side and a cheeky pass across the D past the defender created the 2’s fourth goal thanks to Bella.
The final stages and the 2’s gained a short corner (we won’t mention how many failed short corners had happened up to this point (maybe something to work on in training… 🤔). A German routine was selected and Lara got the final goal.
Whether it was Haighy’s calm and collected nature, Bec’s authoritative words or just our pure, raw talent that meant the final score was 5-0. Xoxo
