Dear diary,
It was sooooo windy and humid. After consuming the breakfast of athletes, the ladies 2’s turned up to Polo, full of vibes (and carbs).
With Tara in charge of the pre-match tunes, the cabin was party central. A heartfelt and tear-jerking speech from Becs meant we were ready to play and have some fun.
A lengthy warm up and some concerning stares from the other end of the pitch and we were ready to start. Holcombe had first pushback and sadly rattled us early on and managed to put a goal away. Knowing we had nothing to lose, we pushed on. A lovely ball up the line from Martha to EJ granted Canterbury with their first scoring opportunity of the game. EJ hit the ball across the D, which was deflected off a Holcs stick into the path of Tara, who reverse slapped it into the path of goal (or should we say the goal post…). Wanting some more action, Holcombe managed to slide another one (DJ Khaled) past Georgia.
Half time came and an inspiring talk from Coach Becs, Ass. Coach Jaime and Manager Ziggy got us pumped up for the 2nd half. Some glorious transfers from our defence of Dunny, Freya, Martha and Jorja meant that we had control of the game. A great lead from Kate and a drive down the line meant we were in Holcs defensive 25. A text from sidelines from the queen herself, Deidre MacKinnon, containing “🌵🕺🏼🐕” (which translates to “****, man and dog”) fuelled some psychic energy into the 2’s because 10 seconds later, Alex passed the ball to Vicky who gracefully pulled the ball back from the keepers pads and lifted it into the goal. The celebrations from the dugout were wild. Despite our wonderful play and effort, Holcombe managed to score another goal. Sexy passes between the midfield of Jorja, Irmak and Gemma meant we were able to drive the ball up the pitch and into the D. A cheeky pass from Tara into the ‘danger zone’ and EJ managed to slip a reverse past the keeper and into the goal. The celebrations were again wild and the man and dogs pants were on the floor. With the score now 3-2, we began to think we could bring this back to at least a draw… read on to find out if we achieved this.
Holcombe had a few short corners in the final 10 minutes of the game which they were unable to convert, however, they were not onboard with our “let’s have a draw” memo and found the backboard once again. The final score was 4-2 but we put everything into the game and rounded off the season feeling proud and happy with our performances.
For the final time of the 23/24 season 🙁
XOXO
Canterbury Ladies 2’s
