The local Derby, Canterbury v Herne Bay. The Grims had a lot to prove after our previous outing against the Bay in what was a freak result for the team, so this time we wanted to right the wrongs and get 3points on the board.

The game started strong, we played some great hockey in the first 10 minutes, with coach Valentine saying ‘that was the standard he wanted for the whole game’ at HT. Within 10 minutes we were 2-0 up, some ground forward counter play between Hurst, Upton and Bucks resulted in Upton slotting away the first. The second, coming from a silky touch from Upton through the defender and Hurst put it away calmly into the side netting, 2-0.

Herne bay pulled one back through a soft goal along the baseline which was pulled back, 2-1. The 2 goal lead was quickly made again by a strong drive from Upton along the baseline which was knocked across for Hurst to slot into an open net, 3-1. The score at HT reflected the positive performance of the team but we know it wouldn’t be an easy second half.

Herne bay were the first to score in the second half to give them a slither of hope at getting something from the game, a worked PC just made its way past a scrawling Brad in goal, 3-2. There’s 3 certainties in the world, Death, Taxes and a Stewie Keir PC goal which he rocked into the bottom corner after stating before the goal ‘there’s a gap there’ 4-2. Hurst then completed his Hat-Trick with a goal assisted off the post by former grims player Richard Wade, 5-2. Herne bay scored to make it 5-3 in which they again thought they were still in it. Thankfully, Hurst slotted into and empty next from yet another Upton drive alone the baseline to make it 6-3, Herne bay scored from a cracking shot from the top of the D to make it 6-4 with minutes to go and there was a roar from the players giving them a spur of hope. That was very quickly turned into a weep rather than roar as Hurst added his 5th of the game, a nice quick interception and pass from Keir found Hurst in the circle who flicked past a diving keeper, 7-4 and thus giving us the 3 points.
