Dear diary,
The day was off to a good start with the pre-game sausage rolls, homemade by Lorna’s mum (BIG SHOUTOUT). A solid team talk from Nathan (and a few extra players compared to last week…) and the 2’s were raring to go. A surprise visit from captain Becs was also welcomed, as she provided the warm-up tunes. The vibes were on point, which was proven 2 minutes after first push back when Tara found the backboard. Unfortunately, the celebrations were too much and Folkestone caught us off guard. 5 minutes in and the score was 1-1. Some good play from the defence, including Martha, Jaime, Lorna and Dunny – Jina would like to add that her slaps were “extra creamy today”. Moving on from Jina’s comment and moving up the pitch, Canterbury secured another goal thanks to Tara. Canterbury continued to press Folkestone high up the pitch and were gifted with a short corner. A lovely strike and some second (and third and fourth) phase play meant Irmak slotted the ball past the keeper. A flurry of short corners at the end of the first half, secured Canterbury a 4th goal courtesy of EJ. The umpires, however, in this moment decided that they were rooting for the opposition and the goal was disallowed for “not all of the ball crossed the line”. Not ones to let their heads go down, we came back out in the second half wanting to continue our lead. Some lovely baseline leads from Chirpy, Alex and Vicky meant that Folkestone were severely under pressure. Tara decided that she did want not to be accused of “jug avoidance” and deflected a lovely pass from Gemma over the top of the keeper and popped the ball into the back of the net. Folkestone continued to push and Chirpy took one for the team by wearing a lifted ball on her elbow. It might have been 4-1 but Canterbury weren’t done yet. Some one twos from Cara and Rachel in the midfield and outlets to the forwards, and Tara got her fourth goal (4 for you Glen Coco). We continued to push until the final whistle and the game finished 5-1 .
Special mentioned to Georgia, who only touched the ball a handful of times and made some sensational saves. Very good very nice.
