In the dimming twilight of a 4:30pm showdown, the Pilgrims clashed sticks with Old Williamsonians in a hockey spectacle that unfolded like a Shakespearean drama on astroturf. The Old Williamsonians, who clinched second spot last season, drew first blood, only for the audacious Freddie McMullan to weave through opposition defences with an exquisite display of skill, levelling the score. Alas, the pendulum swung back as Old Williamsonians found the net twice more, heading into halftime with a 3-1 lead.
The umpires, in a nod to Shakespeare’s penchant for drama, allowed the game to simmer into a tetchy affair, adding an extra layer of intensity to the contest. In the closing act, captain Simon Buckingham earned a green card for a robust challenge, remarkably receiving the only card issued in the game.
The spotlight, however, shone brightest on Olly Curtiss, whose stellar defending and cricketing finesse thwarted the majority of Old Williamsonians’ aerial bombardment. Curtiss earned the coveted Man of the Match title, a testament to his resilience, composure and strategic brilliance.
As the curtain falls on this encounter, the Pilgrims look ahead to a date with destiny against Cliftonville next week, determined to dust off the setbacks and script a triumphant return to winning ways.
