This Saturday Canterbury Ladies 1s travelled up to Surbiton, feeling motivated and confident from our win last week, with a full squad and many supporters on the bench.
After a good warm up, the first quarter was underway. We played with intensity which the Surbiton ladies 2s matched. In the first five minutes we had a couple of breaks but we were unsuccessful in scoring. Surbiton done a great job in defending a lot of the quarter, until the last couple of minutes where they put us under a little bit of pressure till the quarter whistle blew
Surbiton kept up this pressure and was fighting for a goal in the second quarter. Our ladies done well to keep the ball out the goal and turn our pressing and defending into a super strength of ours. We pushed back and had a couple of breaks but not as often as we would’ve liked. We defended until half time, where we now had to regain our composure.
The 3rd quarter began and we seemed to be on top, we were having far more opportunities going forward, but so did surbiton. A couple of harsh decisions were made which didn’t go in Canterbury’s favour causing a penalty flick to be awarded to the opposition. We had full confidence in our goalkeeper to make the save. Aurora mears made an incredible save in the heat of the moment, to keep us in the game.
The 4th quarter had now begun and we came out all guns blazing and ready to hit them hard on the counter. And that’s what we did we pushed hard, they then got a break in the last five minutes where they got awarded a short corner. The first ball in got blocked to be deflected to another one of there players where it was pushed to the far corner and was tapped in on the far post. A really unfortunate goal to be conceded. Nevertheless Canterbury continued to fight till the last seconds, a ball came into the surbiton D in the last ten seconds where it was annoyingly deflected wide. The whistle blew to call full time. With the game finishing with a frustrating 1-0 loss.
This weekend didn’t go how we planned but we are feeling even more ready to bring it to Barnes at home next weekend.
