Men’s 1st XI vs Oxford Hawks (Away) | 11 Feb 23

Drew 3-3

Scorers: M. Puzey, J. Valentine, A. Laslett

MoM: J. Meakin / A. Laslett

DoD: B. Young

With the first of three consecutive away fixtures lined up, the boys in green and white travelled to Oxford on a Saturday afternoon seeking another 3 points.

Looking to continue the quick start to the game from last week, Puzey converted yet again to put the away side one nil up within the opening minutes from a penalty corner. Canterbury continued to apply heaps of pressure winning a number of other corners, however, failed to convert and extend their league. The second quarter was identical to the first with Canterbury dominating possession but still unable to find that second goal. Rea in goal made some fantastic close action saves to keep the away side in front at the half time break.

The second half took a turn as the home side broke through Canterbury lines and scored two back to back goals and shortly after a third which meant that Canterbury had a mountain to climb if they wanted to get something out of the game. The final quarter saw a change in mentality as the away side started to find their form and got one back through a Valentine deflection and soon after Laslett scored the equaliser with minutes left to play. Canterbury continued to search for that final goal winning a number of corners and having some close chances, but failed to find the crucial fourth goal to give them all three points.

With a 3-3 draw in the final scoreline, the boys were treated to cold showers and below average teas to sum up the day. Done and dusted.

A wake up call and a long week of preparation, Canterbury now travel to league leaders Southgate on Saturday to make amends.

We also bid farewell to J. Tritton & C. Browne-Lee as they travel to Australia to begin their adventure down under.

Thanks to all those that travelled. See you next week.
