DoD: Alex for his novel short corner routine
A very even match with honours fairly shared.
New goalie for the day was Andy Hurst who pulled off a couple of fine saves and should have put him in the running for Man of the Match but as he isn’t a regular Friar (as of yet anyway but that day will come) he will just take the plaudits – as he does – but he used it as an excellent warm-up for his later starring role for the 5s in their excellent game and a goal! But big thanks for him stepping into the breach.
So the MoM goes to Louis Bennett in his third adult match has slotted into the Friars nursery like a duck to water and was quite happy to “boss it” with some burly Folkestone players.
Other than that not a lot to report which will please our readers who have a short attention span – hey ho!
Alex Ricketts played, as usual, a solid role at the back without the volume this week (leaving that to Hursty directing ops from the goal mouth) as did Mike Barton and Biggles. John Ratty Ratcliffe didn’t have his most disciplined game and got to a “final warning” with Kevin after a 4th poor tackle. He took it on the chin admitting his guilt. Phil’s tweaked hamstring had amazingly mended inside a week – what an athlete. Alex also made a good effort to be a forward by badly fluffing a short corner injection which for some reason he was desperate to take – still it brought some smiles to the rest of the team and thoughts of “there but for the grace of God go I”. !
With Phil, Jamie and Geordie nursing injuries (what’s new-ed?) it was the usual minor injuries re-habiliation dept.. Both teams had their chances – Jon Aikin trying his LBZ volley which didn’t come off, Hayward and Hooker missing one each and young Louis making darting runs upfield. An unfortunate injury to the cheekbone of a Folkestone player saw the game held up for a while but thankfully he was OK though he seemed more worried about what his wife would say about his rapidly swelling face “and playing silly games at his advanced age”.
Yes we’ve heard those comments from Friars partners haven’t we Biggles ? especially if they come from Yorkshire.
A point each was the right result.
Thanks to Kevin and Phil for umpiring and onwards to Corporal Jones 80th Birthday match in Tunbridge Wells next week. Can he make it until then?
