Canterbury Ladies 1s had an early start this Saturday, as they travelled to Cambridge city to play. After receiving some coaching tips from our enthusiastic coach, we were ready to bring our game to them. Cambridge ladies 1s ensured to get in our heads from the start by giving us the wrong address, meaning 3/4 of the team were standing in the middle of a field. When they finally arrived, they quickly got changed and we had a brief chat. We knew our first time playing together after the break would be tough, but we focused on two key things communication and confidence.
The first quarter was underway, Cambridge knew they needed to bring the fire and they did. Canterbury started with the same intensity causing Cambridge to get frustrated with the fact it was 0-0 and we were getting shots on. The first quarter ended with this score line and we now understood the way Cambridge was trying to play.
The second quarter began and we were even more confident in our ability. We had lots of opportunity’s in there D and we were working together to try to alter the score line. Finally we had a break with Kerler receiving the ball at the top of the D, she pushed it to her back hand and scored an absolute beauty. The next goal came shortly after, again with kerler at the top of the D smashing it bottom corner where Chloe got a touch on it. Making it 2-0 and a very happy team.
The half time whistle blew, we spoke about focusing on our game in the next half and not assuming we have won.
The 3rd quarter started and as we had expected Cambridge came at us with intensity, we held our game however and pushed back where we managed to get a penalty stroke, where kerler made it 3-0. Towards the end of the quarter Cambridge put us under waves of pressure and we got carded twice quite close together, leaving only 9 on the pitch. Despite this we managed to only concede one goal.
The final quarter had began and we came out with far more intensity. We had regained our composure and we were ready to hit them hard on a counter. And that’s exactly what we did, passing around there defence and finally to kerler again in the perfect position where she received and skilled up the keeper. Making it 4-1 and kerler achieving her hat-trick. A second goal was scored shortly after from the opposition making the final score 4-2.
It’s fair to say we started the second half on the season as we mean to go on. We go again against Surbiton next week!
