DoD: Coach Lummers

Travelling to Lewes is always a difficult away day, and this one proved no different. After sitting in the backlog of a crash on the M23 we were met with a story that the more senior car were lucky to be alive due to a near pre-match bust up with a Faversham local. A potential omen to the game itself.

The changing room atmosphere was a bit flat as one or two were shaken from the pre-match shenanigans, however this picked up during the warm up and we were ready to go despite depleted numbers. Unfortunately, the pick-up in arousal was not enough as Lewes quickly went 2 goals up – firstly through a nicely played counter attack after Coach Lummers was on the wrong end of a dubious 5 yard call, and the second from more nice play leaving a player free to score at the near post. Canterbury came into the game more and more resulting in a short corner. Short corner ‘specialist’ Lloydy converted to the right of the goalkeeper. More good play continued however it was a counter attack that gave Canterbury the equaliser. Josh Kitson played the ball through to the Wantaway Striker (who had a ball retention percentage of roughly 0% at this point) to round the goalkeeper after a dodgy first touch and send a rocket that only NASA would be proud of into the top corner. It is important to note that authors of match reports are often liable to embellish the truth. A half-blocked hit that looped into the far corner may also suffice. Canterbury went into the half-time break optimistic after the first half comeback.

More good play continued in the second half and chances came and went. This was until the final 5 minutes when the ball found the Wantaway Striker who passed the ball to Bucks, freshly recovered from the previous night’s ‘entertainment’, to score with a reverse hit 5 yards from goal. Canterbury kept digging in and, with the help of Captain Dunn’s wanders around Lewes, they saw out an important win in the battle for survival. Some players ended the game battered and bruised, none more so than Coach Lummers. Luckily a plaster or two were available to aid the ouchie and prevent some stained jeans for the journey home. Unfortunately, there were no flower or Peppa Pig decorated ones available – something that could be arranged for future travesties. A great effort by all in the end to grab a 3-2 victory and the 3 points.
