This week we took a lovely 170-mile round trip to face Woking 1 XI. Despite the freezing cold weather conditions, we went into the game eager to build on our performance from last week which saw us get our first win of the season.
This week we had a great lineup paired with Dunny’s enthusiastic warm-up and running put us in a great position to get another 3 points. The game started well with us dominating Woking and gaining ourselves a short corner. Our number one flicker Nathan (sorry Lioydy) stepped up to the plate and scored a beautiful flick putting us into an early lead. This dominance continued with a couple of great turnovers coming from our press and goal-scoring opportunities. Unfortunately, the next two goals came from Woking. The first being myself wanting to make the game more interesting and picking a ball that was in the air (and going wide) into my own goal. After this Aidan thought, he would like to join me in helping Woking to their second goal by mistakenly passing the ball to their centre forward at the top of our D. Although these two goals and the others Woking scored saw the win slip out of our hands, we still created some great scoring opportunity’s including a one on one between Spencer and their keeper which only narrowly missed.
Late into the second half, we managed to make it 4-2. This was due to some great link-up play between midfield and our attackers which culminated in a lovely cross-goal pass for a diving tap-in by Bucks. Unfortunately, we were not able to get any more goals in the final stages of the second half. This meant that despite our great start and dominance the final score was 4-2 to Woking.
There were too many great individual performances this week to name everyone. Two people stick out from the crowd for me though. The first is Josh and his impressive number one running from defensive short corners and deflecting the shot away several times. The second person and our MOM this week was Nathan who had a great game despite not playing in the centre-back position within a game before.
Some highlights from the game included the Woking player thinking he was some pro athlete conducting high-altitude training and forgetting he was in Woking. Kenners and the still damp shirts, which I still think is a game plan to not have to do them again or Aidan’s comment of “oh my god theirs two of you” to Spencer and his brother.
Next week we face Sittingbourne at home where hopefully we can get another 3 points.
