Canterbury 050s vs Sevenoaks O50s

Canterbury over 50s turned up on a wet Sunday to play a solid Sevenoaks, confident but recognising we were missing several players through various ailments as well as others playing whilst managing the usual injuries. Luckily the rain relented and Canterbury started strongly with both Mark ” Ollie” Hollingworth and Steve Laslett providing plenty of go forward drive pressurising the Sevenoaks defence.

Canterbury took the lead in a tight scoreless game after a PC broke down, but Ollie managed to bobble a reverse stick pass to Stuart Forbes to finish. Unfortunately Canterbury then slackened the pressure, leading to a Sevenoaks PC which was beautifully finished at a perfect height into the corner to make it 1-1. Canterbury still looked solid with the defence working hard and the forwards looking dangerous … but an unfortunate error led to a chance for Sevenoaks which they converted clinically, somehow hitting the top of the net above Trigger’s head .. 1-2.

It looked an uphill task for Canterbury, with Steve Las going off with a hamstring twinge, but after a period of struggle Canterbury got back into the game with the whole squad working hard to try and work out a new structure. Eventually a great pass from John Gurney at the heart of defence, freed the midfield to look up and deliver a pass to Kev Miller to deftly deflect the ball past the Sevenoaks GK (meat & drink for him!)

Full time came with the score at 2-2, meaning the dreaded penalty flick shootout. After the first 5 flicks both sides were level, after Trigger had saved 2 of their flicks. Ollie volunteered to take our first sudden death flick and confidently put it away, leaving Trigger to guess correctly and pick Paddy Osborn’s flick from the top corner with a fantatis flying save. A great win in a tough match, with Holcs next up.

Well done to everyone … a really gritty result with everyone in the squad contributing with complete commitment.
