This weeks game, Ladies 1s travelled to Wimbledon to play under the lights . The match began with a lot of energy from both sides. Wimbledon got awarded a penalty corner in the first 5 minutes and Canterbury went 1-0 down from a deflection. Nevertheless Canterbury did not let this effect there performance, they were still fighting and having more opportunities in the D. The first quarter ended and we were still feeling positive going into the second quarter. Canterbury controlled the intensity and we made some great decisions going forward. Wimbledon’s goal keeper made an impeccable save, from Lucy Barnes powerful shot in, it deflected up off the goalkeeper’s pads and was cleared. There was also an amazing run from centre back Mel Clewlow who found herself In Wimbledons D and winning a penalty corner which was not awarded because of some tough calls from the umpire.
The third quarter was underway, Wimbledon managed to capitalise on a few turnovers and created danger for our defence. Wimbledon utilised this short period and managed to get another short corner. Sophie Pinney ran an exceptional line to the top of the D, the ball was flicked above her shin pads. To our dismay the decision didn’t go our way, the penalty corner was rewarded where they managed to score to make it 2-0.
Canterbury came together at quarter time and decided to end the 4th quarter on a high and score a goal. Canterbury pushed through and brought the intensity to Wimbledon. They had some breaks going forward but couldn’t quite get it in the goal. They pressed aggressively and tried to win the ball high up the pitch. Lily Beer picked up a green card for hitting the ball once the whistle had blown, putting the team down to ten players. Canterbury managed to stay composed at this time until they were back up to 11. Towards the end of this quarter Wimbledon got awarded a penalty corner, where they hit the ball at an awkward angle for our goalkeeper to save. Which then made it 3-0. A tough game for the ladies this weekend, but onwards and upwards for our last game, before the season break next weekend.
