Men’s Pilgrims vs BBHC 1s (Home) | 08 Oct 22

Won 6-1

Scorers: Hurst x4 Buckingham x2

MoM: Hurst

DoD: Buckingham

The Pilgrims came into their third game of the season looking to continue the momentum from last week’s victory. After a rousing team talk from the skipper (“don’t do anything amazing”), the boys in green and white came out of the blocks raring to go.

The early pressure on the BBHC defence told as the ball found its way to Hurst in the D who managed to dispatch the opener into the top left corner. Not long after, Hurst doubled his and Canterbury’s tally for the afternoon, making an interception and putting the ball past the keeper to make it 2-0. The Pilgrims continued in the ascendency and soon made it 3-0 with Buckingham finishing from a tight angle after some good build up play. Another quick break from the back found Handley on the left who played a quick ball across the keeper to find Buckingham diving in at the far post to go 4-0 up. The one-sided first half was solidified by a dizzying dribble from Hurst through the BBHC defence, who then nonchalantly passed the ball into the bottom left corner past the keeper for his hattrick.

Despite losing Keir and Goode to first half injuries, the home side went into the half time break with a dominant 5-0 lead and eager to push on. With a youthful midfield, chances to extend the lead came and went, with some good opportunities spurned by the home side/Buckingham. This, along with BBHC deciding to drop their zonal marking for the second half, resulted in a much tighter second half. Despite continued Canterbury pressure, the opposition managed to find their way into the Canterbury D against the run of play, and managed to scramble in a scrappy consolation goal. However, there was still enough time in the game for Hurst to grab his fourth of the afternoon, lurking at the back post for a simple tap in to cap a fine individual performance, and to complete a fantastic team effort.

A fantastic 6-1 win for the Pilgrims leaves them 3rd in the table after 3 games. Next week sees the team travel down the A28 to face Ashford 1s under the lights, looking to make it three wins in a row.
