As a beaver, cub and then a scout of the 10th Deal (Eastry) Scout Group, circa 1995-1999, I learnt many a life lesson, none more so than the motto from Robert Baden Powell himself, “Be prepared”.
After a long away day to Eastbourne the previous week, the 2s decided one game in a day wasn’t enough so took to the road to take on Aldershot and Farnham!
There were many obstacles for the 2s to overcome in order to try and get a result. Completed in 1986 the M25 was described in The Economist as having ‘taken 70 years to plan [the motorway], 12 to build it and just one to find it was inadequate’ The same could have been said on Saturday, many delays meant the team arrived somewhere between 11:30 and 12:15 (12:30 pb)
The game finished 3-1 to the bad guys. Rhys grabbing the solitary goal for Canterbury.
As seems to be coming common place in the world of hockey the team then had to drive to a different venue to get showered and enjoy the post match hospitality of the opposition. The 3-1 win wasn’t good enough for the A&F coach as they went straight to the classroom for a debrief and to do their daily quota of bicep curls!
The good guys enjoyed a beer and baked potato in the October sun, except Lloydy, the self proclaimed gastromonist enjoying a plate of beans and grated cheese.
17 year old James Logan was rightly awarded MOM for a display in the middle of the pitch that defied his years.
DOD was given to OL for a variety of reasons, the main one being ‘bringing his girlfriend to the match, wearing full kit and not playing’
With OL driving he was unable to take part in the pint off, his co-pilot stepped up and sunk the beverage in 9 seconds, leaving youngster James choking on his coca-cola!
A long day for the 2s and one that we will put down as an experience that will only make the young squad stronger!
