Last (postponed) match of the season and a journey up to the HSBC Ground in Mike Barton’s Fun Bus for some. Not a lot to write about, indeed The Scribbler has suffered from writer’s block these last few games as the goals have pinged in on our backboard with disturbing regularity and the spin needed to write these reports gets increasingly fictional. And so it was again today.

A welcome return from injury for Cllr Alex however and others with varying degrees of fitness – Merv also from his broken collar bone meant that we had a squad of 14. No lack of effort but a well organised New Beccs team had the edge throughout the game. There were some opportunities for the Friars but these often somewhat fizzled out which is what our season did a bit but thanks to New Beccs for supplying our keeper.

Apart from a fox sauntering behind one of the goals at half time (yes really!) looking somewhat contemptuously at us wondering if there were any easy pickings – ie Brian’s Jaffa cakes – that was about it.

The best news late in the day was hearing that two Friars Dads (Trigger and John Boy) up in Nottingham with the Canterbury under 16 boys had won their National Finals (as indeed the under 14s did also).

However despite losing our last 4 games by hefty margins we still managed 6th in the League a lot due to Trigger for his GK exploits during the season. Also big thanks to our Christ Church trio of Jamie (Jammer) Harris, Lucas Coda-East and Harry Lomas for turning out for us regularly and putting up with hearing about senior ailments that they shouldn’t hear about at their time of life. Thanks to skipper Jonesy for getting a team out each week – a challenge! And finally Good Luck to the over 55s who travel all the way to Stockton-on-Tees next weekend for their national semi final and to the over 45s who play at Polo. Have a good summer All.

Squad: Bert Andrews, Mike Barton, Lucas Coda-East, Jamie Harris, Geordie Hayward, Chris Hendy, Brian Hurlow, Tony Jones (C), Merv Lewis, Tim Lewis, John Maylam, Alex Ricketts, Chris Ward, and Pete from New Beccs (GK)
