For our match day elite squad we had the Chairman (Mr A Watkins), the President (Mr J Mayhem) and the oldest living player with flowing white hair in the club (you know who that is readers!). Now this should have counted for at least a modicum of respect but we were met by a Sittingbourne team warming up with a ghetto blaster of “music” at volume 10 – not in the Friars comfort zone at all which is more Mellow Magic! Still, apart from three under 30s we were at least able to turn our hearing aids down.

For the first 20 minutes the Friars defence held out not least from some excellent keeping from Chairman Adam donning his pads in our hour of need. John Boy after his heroic performance last week was kept in defence and with the return of Mike Barton from injury we had some height!

However after 20 minutes three goals came from the Sittingbourne team in quick succession and we ended the first half 4 down with a few forays from last week’s hatrick hero Bert Andrews into the Sittingbourne half which did not materialise with anything of profit.

After numerous jaffa cakes and Merv trying valiantly to do a Borthwick half time talk the second half continued with 4 more rapid fire goals from the home team that basically sealed the match in front of a very vocal and amusing bunch of WaGaM supporters.

There were a couple of short corners for the Friars deep into the half but again to no avail and despite big efforts we ended up second.

So what on paper at the beginning of the day was just 2 spaces of difference mid-table turned out by the end of the match as a gulf – a bit like The Kiwis v India in the T20 World Cup final. And to compound our woes Scotland won and England lost in the 6 Nations!

Another match day beckons this Saturday and more jaffa cakes to slow us down……..
