They say Christmas is a time for giving, but most people stop on the 26th. Unfortunately, we didn’t get the memo. In our first outing since the festive break, we travelled to face our perennial bogey team Folkestone, and proved that while the turkey may be gone, the spirit of unwarranted generosity is alive and well.

The game started with surprising promise. Despite the extra girth of some squad members, we looked sharp. Evergreen Stewie Keir put us 1-0 up from a clinical short corner routine slotted straight down the middle of the goal that suggested we might actually break the curse.

Then, the festive spirit took over. In a display of festive hospitality we gifted them two goals just before half-time. By the break, we had turned a lead into a deficit through sheer altruistic kindness.

After half time, we managed to claw ourselves back into it with a backhand from Benny Hare struck so sweetly that no one would have guessed he’d not touched a stick for weeks. 2-2. The comeback was on. The curse was about to be broken.

But you can’t fight fate, especially when fate looks like a mishit cross. With time running out, Folkestone hit us on the break and all looked safe until the scuffed cross bobbled perfectly into the path of a waiting striker for a back-post tap-in.

Hopefully the festive season will be over by next week.
