The tone for the day was set early when Moi decided that satnavs are for less adventurous people. Luckily, Nikki wasn’t driving, or the team would’ve been warming up in Marden.
Unfortunately the game had hardly started when Sevenoaks had a lightning breakaway, doh 1–0 down to Sevenoaks.
But fear not, Canterbury struck back when Sapphire burst through with a glorious 2-on-1. Her finish earned five conversion points in rugby terms, which is especially impressive considering she was playing hockey.
Still 0–1 at half time, captain Alex’s delivered an inspirational team talk—part Churchill, part Attenborough, part “please just score.”
And so we did. After some lovely attacking play, we earned a penalty corner.. Izzy L smashed the ball, which took a deflection off Sevenoaks and rocketed into the roof of the net. 1–1. Game on.
But the moment of the match… Nikki Triggs out of retirement! For now! Showing she’s still got it, she nearly removed a defender’s head with one of her shots. Fingers crossed she’s not broken for the rest of the week.
Our defensive wall was outstanding, shutting down everything Sevenoaks tried, the midfield working tirelessly and the forwards kept the pressure on, soon got Sevenoaks defence arguing amongst themselves (very helpful of them).
Zoe then won two short corners in quick succession, and tactical genius from Nikki, we executed a beautiful routine that ended with Zoe smashing it in at the back post. 2–1 Canterbury!
A brilliant team effort, fantastic play all round, and the perfect way to end this half of the season.
