Despite being a murky Saturday, Canterbury Ladies 4s had a good vibe as we welcomed Old Wills Ladies 2s to the away pitch (AW2). Despite Old Wills struggling to find the pitch and requesting a land train next time, the game started on time. Even thought we had a different team from the previous week again, Canterbury were quick out of the blocks and put pressure on OW defence hard and early. With plenty of youth on our side (keeping the average down!), our superior speed resulted in early chances. A number of penalty corners went begging but eventually, after some sustained pressure, Sapphire flicked the ball past the keeper from an acute angle on the right, firing it into the netting to put us up 1-0. Tireless running from the forwards – Vickie, Sapphire, Zoe and Millie meant the press was bringing results and we won the ball high up the pitch on numerous occasions, allowing our midfield of Hermione, Megan, Moira and Georgie to spend a lot of time in the attacking half. Zoe Triggs then managed to put us 2-0 ahead before the half time break.
Threats from OW were few and far between, comfortably repelled by the defence of Alex, Munnsy, Sophie and POM Rosie, who had a brilliant game playing left back. Despite OW getting a breakaway goal in the second half, Ava in goal had very little to do and we only defended one penalty corner. Final score 2-1 – never in doubt! Great performances by all the team, played in really great spirit with Old Wills and ably umpired by Charlie Griffiths and Murray Evans. A very enjoyable game and everyone came off smiling.
