At the half way point of the first half of the season it was requested our readers would like a half term report!?
As the score line suggested we were in complete control of this game with David K barely touching the ball in goal. The back four of Jolyon, James, David and Graham were very much in tune with each other and carefully blotted out any attacks from the opposition. Dell, Steve, James P and James C were certainly involved and did much to upset Marden and gave them no room in which to work. James P opened the scoring with a cross / pass / shot which the Marden goalie rather unbelievably stepped over and watched into the goal! Steve then scooped the ball in from a very tight angle to score his weekly goal. James C more or less tripped over the ball for his first but rather more convincingly got his second; the debate about jug avoidance then started!!!
Up front Harry and Kai had so much pace the Marden defenders found it difficult to keep up! David I and Tony came on and settled quickly to the nature of the game and gave no chance for Marden to create any space. Tony P was on the pitch at the end to strike a thunderous short corner onto the back board which rounded off a great afternoon.
Mention should also go to those who were not able to make it to Marden – the successful start to the season (4 played – 4 wins) is very much down to the ‘squad’ that is the Squires; Pete Bowell, Graeme Kemsley, Nick Scott-Kilvert and Harper Philipps have played a regular part in the season so far which has started so brightly. It must be recognised that tough fixtures are still to come and injuries continue to play their part in this Vets set up – with good fortune and resting, when possible, the remainder of the season looks bright. Whilst it is always nice to win, the sense of this particular group of players is about getting together on a Saturday, working together as a team and enjoying a beer afterwards………oh and a little ribbing of fellow players along the way.
