The trip to westlands school can be a daunting one. The lack of changing facilities, team talks outside, warming up in the 5th form play ground all before walking out onto the hard sanddressed Astro. Meanwhile the blue and gold kit worn by the opposition conjures images of Bobby Goulds 87 cup winning Wimbledon side. It’s not for the faint of heart.
With the Sun trying to poke through, Spud shuffled the pack. 9 changes were made in the lead up and apart from a handful of old heads it was young pilgrims side that would take on the grizzly gore court.
First half was pretty even, GC edging ahead after counter attacking from a grims corner. Winning and converting their own with aplomb. 1-0. Shortly after they made it 2 with another swift counter attack.
Half time came and the Grims were buoyant. ‘We’re still in this’ was the war cry of Captain Spud and the youngsters seemed to take heed. Pilgrims dominated the second half with good slick passing hockey, plenty of circle penetration and over a handful of penalty corners. There were good saves, goal line clearances, disallowed goals and penalty corners that whistled wide. Every eventuality except that elusive equaliser. Hamish did slot one home with 10 minutes to go and it was a spectacular finally, however GC held on for the 2-1 win.
