MENS CLUB DINNER MATCH REPORT

Over 100 members attended Canterbury Mens Hockey Club and Awards Dinner on 2nd May.

The Club Chairman, Adam Watkins, gave a speech, his main message being the emphasis on youth development. This was borne out with the Development Team, full of youngsters and a few dads, who came second in their league being awarded the Team of The Year, and this in their first year of being formed. Michael Holness the team’s player manager had done a “sterling job”, said Adam.

Nathan Summer was the Young Player of the Year whilst evergreen Glenn Prebble with half a century of years behind and hopefully ahead of him was the season’s top goal scorer.

The coveted Clubman of the Year went to Phil Sandy. Phil has been a member of Canterbury HC for 25 years and took up umpiring when he was 17 after an injury that stopped him playing hockey. Now 67 he has been umpiring for 50 years.

For the last 4 years and on every Saturday during the season, Phil has been organising all the umpiring for the Mens Matches who are not appointed by the Kent Hockey Association – that is for all the home matches for the lower 6 teams of the Club. That means ensuring that for each home game there are 2 umpires from Canterbury Hockey Club for every match throughout the season. His award is thoroughly deserved and this was borne out by a standing ovation for him, see photo attached.

The raffle was organised by The Friars and this raised nearly £700 for club funds. Suzie McCully and her team provided all the catering which was excellent.
