A strange game this…….4 goals from Barry Thomas; over a dozen penalty corners for Herne Bay and only 2 for The Friars and numerous outstanding saves from Simon Triggs which with Thomas’s goals won the match. Elsewhere the 4 cylinder Friars engine only functioned on 3 with some poor passing, lazy tackling and none of the ability of the previous week.
That said the score was 4-1 and the scoreboard looked good, indeed the table looks good with 5 wins out of the last 6 matches, the only loss being when our Manager (Dowling. P) was absent for an early start at Holcombe – strange that!.
There was one other bright spark plug in this game and that was Dowling G. who since his return to hockey via the Friars improves week by week. John Aikin moved from striker to sweeper to make up for the absence of Ricketts (as you do) and this bolstered the defence. Bert Andrews returning from injury was a touch on the rusty side and really should cut out the aerials in the D!
And that was about it really – Oh Yes Cllr Ricketts out walking with his pooch in the woods before the game injured himself and so we were down to 12.
Up to half time the one goal lead always looked fragile against a competitive Herne Bay team but apart from the visitor’s goal in the second half the Friars dominated and Thomas’ skilful and opportunist goals which were very good ensured the Friars would always triumph. Your scribbler had a touch of writer’s block for this game as you can see from this waffly report.
SO In summary – the 2 Ts really – up front Thomas and in goal Triggs and in the gooey middle Guy Dowling. Bit like sandwich spread at school back in the day.
Thanks to Paino and Stuart for umpiring and Mr Bob Green for supporting as ever!
And off we went to wish Sue Boddy a happy 70th which Jonesy made sure all of Polo knew about and indeed heard! Trebles all round!
