The Batchelor-Coop Millers embarked on their Saturday adventure to the depths of Beckenham and the HSBC sports ground. Buoyed by strong performances of recent weeks, keeping us in contention for promotion (still undetermined as to whether this is something we actually want), the Millers were looking for a strong performance against a New Beccs side who we had beaten in a feisty 2-1 reverse fixture.
This time was to prove slightly different. To save any readers the pain of our travelling spectators on the side-line, the Millers produced a barrage on the opposition goal, totalling 45 circle entries, 16 short corners and a penalty stroke (well done Ben Lawford…) with the score remaining 0-0. It took the power of connection only a father-son combo can bring (think Vader/ Skywalker…) to break the deadlock, with a precise Reef Upton pass finding his dad, Chris Upton, our impact recruit for the second half of the season, providing a deft touch across the keeper to finish.
After further short corners and (finally) on our 23rd attempt, and the New Beccs defence deciding that conceding them was their best form of attack, we finally finished one off, Ben Lawford making up for earlier mistakes to fire home.
2-0 it remained, a rather flattering score-line to the opposition, and with no game next week some short corner practice is definitely needed! MoM goes to Sembeh for another stellar performance of marauding runs from defence. And Trigger junior also claimed bragging rights over his dad; a clean sheet seeing him leap-frog ‘old leaky-legs’ (his words not ours) and climb back to the top of the family ‘fridge’ league.
