The day started with the traditional mess around in the club shop before the team meeting and then out in front of a large home crowd, ready to cheer us on.
The team started strongly, maintaining possession until Holcombe won the ball near the halfway line and broke to win a short corner. Their flicker scored after the ball ricocheted off Aaron’s knee into the back of Harrison then into the goal making it 1-0. Holcombe then scored a second penalty corner through the same flicker making it 2-0. Looking like the game could get out of our control the team rallied and managed to score thanks to a powerful strike from Harry Roberts. Sadly, we then conceded another goal from open play making it 3-1 to them. With about 10 minutes until half time, we won a penalty corner. The powerful flick from Ali Figgis took a slight deflection which helped it past the keeper’s helmet and into the top of the net making it 3-2.
After having some Haribo and water during the break and an inspiring team talk we were ready to go. From the push back Canterbury had all the possession, attacks and momentum. This resulted in a penalty corner which was scored by Ali Figgis down in the bottom right. This made the score 3-3. Canterbury continued to have all the momentum. Following a good passage of play through the middle of the pitch from Will Upton, then to Mack, who played it to the back post were Harry was waiting to tap it in. A great team goal. We were deservedly 4-3 up. After this Holcombe fought back. They scored a reverse hit from a tight angle, 4-4. Within the last few minutes of the game the umpires gave a penalty corner for the ball hitting their foot in our circle. This gave their flicker one last chance to score. Harrison saved it and the ball started to bounce around. After a real scramble they eventually scored to make it 5-4. This was a really solid team performance with great work rate and excellent control of the play for much of the game. On another day we could have won.
