In a delightful encounter at Polo Farm, the Canterbury Pilgrims hosted the Folkestone 1st team, eager to turn their recent luck around. Early on, the home side dominated possession and crafted some promising chances. However, defensive lapses crept in, allowing Folkestone to sneak away with a 2-0 lead at halftime, much to the chagrin of the Pilgrims’ faithful.

The second half mirrored the first, with the Pilgrims struggling to apply sustained pressure while Folkestone expertly countered. Just when it seemed despair was setting in, Simon Buckingham stepped up with a late consolation goal—many of us missed it, but I’ve been assured it was a worldie! Ultimately, the match ended 5-1 to the visitors.

Special shoutouts to Stuart Goodman, who showcased the talent reminiscent of his glory days back in 2003, earning the Man of the Match award. Meanwhile, Andrew Hurst stirred up some drama by picking a fight with the umpire at halftime—perhaps his unconventional way of rallying the troops! And let’s not forget Philip Jones, who, despite being called upon to help out in defence due to player shortages, had his goodwill rewarded with the DoD nomination.

All in all, a day filled with passion, a few laughs, and a sprinkle of Pilgrim spirit!
