This was a day at the office that would be best forgotten. The most amusement that was had was being creative with the school meal we were served for tea (see pic) though we should be grateful. Suffice to say we look forward to next week’s match and tea back at base.
Onto the real McCoy….With a squad of 11.5 which had by the end had been reduced in effectiveness to about 10 through injury and other issues. It was very much a stop start game with advantage not been played enough and numerous interruptions including at least 5 minutes being wasted by the umpires insisting that 2 Folkestone players must not wear the same no 14 shirts; this is bargain basement SE Invicta League 7 hockey at its most serious folks.
As to the actual hockey it was very much the Friars being out run by a younger team. Effort was not in short supply especially from Arthur Aikin and Will Pattinson. Oly Triggs in goal was in the thick of it and but for him the goals against would have been a lot more. He well deserved his Man of The Match award. Good to see Big Alex back with some great 16 hits outs of which there many, though his short corner routines showed need a bit of polishing.
Big John Aikin is suffering these days and had some opportunities but lacked being supplied enough ball by his aging left and right forwards (Andrews and Hayward).
2 goals down at half time never looked like being overhauled and indeed a further goal was conceded with Folkestone running out as deserved winners but the Friars at least never stopped trying. The showers were freezin’ cold which Jamie Harris didn’t appreciate!
However the Canterbury Tea Ladies would win at least 11-0 on the Tea Front – just sayin’.
