For the first time this season the Men’s X1 were finally back and playing under the lights facing Sevenoaks at 6pm.
Canterbury started off strong playing the ball around with pace and precision, causing Sevenoaks problems early int the game. After working the ball around nicely and some threatening runs, Canterbury managed to win ourselves a penalty corner minutes into the game. As the corner team gathered into a huddle to discuss the plan, they realise that only the third choice flicker ( Craig Boyne) was on the field. However, he did not let the hierarchy bother him and flicked the ball into the side netting making it 1-0 to Canterbury.
The game restarted and Sevenoaks saw themselves starting to retain the ball and starting to work the way into the game. After a few half chances at either end, Sevenoaks found a way to counter against the Canterbury side. With a few slick passes Sevenoaks were in behind the Canterbury back line leaving goalkeeper (Chris Rea) in a 1v1 situation. The Sevenoaks player draged the ball round Chris but the captain of Canterbury committed a last minute foul, meaning a flick was awarded. 1-1.
The half time whistle blew and the Canterbury team made there way into the changing room to regroup and take on some advise from the coaching team.
The Second half began and Canterbury started well, making connections all the way up the pitch where Mr Tweedie found him with space in the circle and unleashing a shot which the keeper saved but making it dangerous. Penalty corner awarded. With a hard well placed flick from Jack Valnetine, Canterbury found themselves 2-1 in the lead. Sevenoaks started to apply real pressure chasing down that second goal but Man of the Match Tom Richford had different plans, making sure Sevenoaks couldn’t find a way through.
Canterbury handled the pressure well and caught Sevenoaks on the counter. Tom Richford smashed the ball to Jamie Tritton, he carried hard towards the circle and then dumped the ball back to Callum Brown-Lea who then won a penalty corner. Following the lead of Craig and Jack, Callum flicker the ball and found the back of the net, making the score 3-1. Straight from the push back, Sevenoaks caught Canterbury sleeping and punished them making the game 3-2 going into the last quarter.
After a few missed opportunities from Canterbury, Sevenoaks once again found themselves in behind the Canterbury back line leaving the goalkeeper in a 1v1 situation, where the ball found its way into the Canterbury goal. With that being the last action of the game, the final score finished 3-3, a disappointing result. A hard week of training awaits as we prepare take on Bath at home in a must win game.
A massive thanks to everybody that came and showed support throughout the whole game.
