After suffering a heavy defeat to Herne Bay the previous week the Grims were ready to get back to winning ways. Beginning the day with a group breakfast at Spoons it seemed as if nothing could go wrong. After a 2 hour train journey the Grims arrived at Hastings, turning up with 12 but missing a few key players, allowing Tom G-S to debut and for Stewie Kier to take the captain’s armband.
Eastbourne started out strong, going 1 – 0 up inside 1 minute of the game with a well-worked goal. Acting as a wake up call for the Grims we finally began playing some of the simple hockey we’re used to. Despite this, Eastbourne kept pushing through making it 4 – 0 by the end of the first half.
After a harsh team talk delivered by Jack Valentine the Grims finally settled into the game and the chances started coming. Even after a few short corners and some great attacks, the back of the net still eluded us and after a few moments of brilliance from the Eastbourne striker, the score went up to 6 – 0. Not ready to give up that easily, we kept pushing through and finally found the back of the net with Hursty and Riley sharing the goals. Although, again, it was Eastbourne who got the last laugh, finishing the game with a diving deflection and when the final whistle blew, the score had settled at 7 – 2.
After a disappointing loss we jumped back onto the train. Determined not to let the team spirit drop Hursty told the group, ‘Win or lose we’re on the booze’.
And so we did.
