Always going to be a tough encounter playing against a club’ second eleven! Even more so when numbers for tea might be somewhat low as ‘most’ needed to get back and play for the 1’s!! The balancing factor had to be the fact they only turned up with 10…..
A tough encounter started with the Squires picking up from the Peter Robins tournament playing some attractive passing hockey; but just not finding the final pass and opening up the solid and bulky defence. A break away broke the stale mate…..sadly to them!
Once this had woken us all up the Squires defence of Dave (K), David (L), Graeme and Jon started to look in control and rebuff all attacks; Robin and Ben shared time from the bench and slotted into the game pattern effortlessly. James (C & L) managed midfield well and brought David (I) and Jimmy into the game superbly. Teddy was running clever lines and testing their back three. Again the final pass or shot just did not test them enough….until a short corner routine on phase two saw James (L) strike on goal only for James (C) to clip in and bring us level. Half time simply emphasised we were doing all the right things and should continue to believe it will bring results eventually. More attacks brought more short corners and despite the excellent opposition keeper saving shot after shot eventually a powerful pass from David (I) found the skipper on the back post to pass it into the goal. A good display of where the Squires have got too with good build up play converted into the 2 goals necessary to come away with a win. A marvellous stop on the line by Jon in the dying minutes ensured all three points rather than what would have been a crushing draw, if he had not been in the right place at the right time!!
Special thanks to the umpires – Kevin and Matt – who put up with the rain and cold wind to see us through!
