The 4XI arrived at Ashford in high spirits, eager to replicate the convincing win of last Saturday.
However, the 4’s were slow off the mark, struggling to retain the ball and somewhat lacking the fight possessed the previous weekend. Multiple short corners were conceded in quick succession, and despite the best efforts and saves of Andy the Ashford attack found their goal.
This was a wakeup call for the 4’s, and although Ashford still dominated the possession, promising Canterbury chances pervaded the rest of the half, and with a classy reverse stick from skipper Podd, we were back in the game. Half time: 1-1.
The second half was a whole new story, the fire inside the 4’s was fully revived, and we dictated the game. The linkup play was dynamic, allowing George to find Matt in the circle, who with a subtle deflection put us in the lead.
As the game continued, a mature Ashford side were unable to keep up with the more youthful 4’s. This, accompanied with dubious ‘hands on’ defending from Alan, much to the frustration of Ashford, prevented their most promising attack. Soon after, the ball worked its way up to Matt who decisively put it past Ashford’s keeper for his second.
Despite Arthur’s best efforts to get himself sent off in the closing minutes, the 4’s only went from strength to strength. Four masterfully crafted passes took the ball from our own D to theirs, with no man taking more than a couple touches, where Thomas scored our fourth and final goal. Score: 4-1
