The 4’s made the long trip down to AW2 to play the 5’s in an entertaining game of hockey, sporting the brand new pumpkin away kit.
After a strong warm-up, the 4’s were lightning out the blocks. Marshalled by the experience of Matt Lea at CF, Jonny Devereux and Thomas Grantham-Stevens were exceptional in the wide areas. Pace, power and some naughty 3D skill to match culminating in Jonny Devereux helping himself to the first two goals of the game. Two composed finishers.
As the game grew, the 4s midfield delightfully dictated the tempo, with stalwart Sabo back in the heart of the midfield trio. With Ellis, Lawford, Fox and Rogers interchanging on the flanks. Tom Rogers on his first outing for the 4s was outstanding, with many on the sidelines identifying a future first team player.
Faz and Coombs partnership in defence continues to flourish, with numerous switches of play left to right, creating space for Cox, Panayides and Dibiase to exploit. Andy Howard in goal additionally pulled off a couple of clutch saves where required.
The second half was more evenly matched, with both sides youthful in age, playing a level of hockey which bodes well for the season and many seasons to come. Thomas Grantham-Stevens turned game poacher, to tuck one away in a goal-mouth scramble.
Before the icing was put on the cake. Skipper Podd subbed himself on for the last 90 seconds, proceeded to collect the ball, take two touches and stack it in the middle of the park. Whilst most were having a chuckle, Foxy picked up the loose ball, sent it wide to Chris Ellis, who smoked one across the D at ankle-height to Ben Lawford, on the volley, scoring one of the goals of his career… just about making up for some abysmal pitch scheduling whilst AW1 was left empty at show-time.
Another away day at Ashford next weekend, 1pm pb. Let’s go.
