The 1s took a trip down the M20 in an eagerly anticipated ‘local’ derby. After a great result last week agains the University of Exeter the boys arrived in good spirits – maybe too good after Carney found the under 5s musical instruments left out that would keep him entertained during the team talk.
The first half a bit like last week was goalless, with Canterbury having a good proportion of the possession – maybe because we encountered a never seen and indoor style 1/4 pitch zonal press. With the pressure on Canterbury were making good use of the possession with some great inter-play between the midfielders and defenders, we asked questions of the goalkeeper but to no avail. We won a penalty corner through some dodgy stick tackling outside the D and a good save by the 7oaks goalkeeper kept the flick from Jack Valentine out. At half time the boys were eager to get going again, maybe they were excited for what was for tea, maybe they wanted to get a cold beer, maybe they wanted to watch Europe win the Ryder Cup or maybeeeee they realised that the Sevenoaks defence were tiring rather quickly. Sevenoaks started the half by passing in back and then throwing an aerial down the pitch – wonder where they’d seen that before?! (Come on 7oaks get your own move, that’s ours!!). Once again Canterbury were maintaining a lot of the possession with our defenders keen to get in on the action seeing our half backs edging closer and closer to the D to help join the attack. Finally after some good play from midfielders we found Mr TikTok himself NMF hockey who beat a player and then slotted a reverse over a coming out keeper. 1-0 Canterbury. A few good plays saw Sevenoaks putting a little bit of pressure on Canterbury, some good defending and some good goalkeeping from Chris kept their chances out. Once again Canterbury were on the attack and win a penalty corner and this time back from his busy marathon running schedule the REAL Mr Marathan (Sorry Meaks) stepped up to plate and scored a well placed drag flick. 2-0 Canterbury. The play was back and forth between both teams having attacks but to no success, until…Sevenoaks somehow managed to top a bouncing ball over Chris’ shoulder and find the back of the net. 2-1 Canterbury. Towards the end of play Canterbury could smell blood and attacked relentlessly but the game finished 2-1 to Canterbury.
A MASSIVE thank you to all the people who took time out of their Sunday to make the journey to Sevenoaks, we all really appreciate the support. We look ahead at training this week to Bath Buccaneers away next Sunday.
