After a sobering result away in Exeter last week, we wanted to put in a strong performance in our last home game of the season.
We started the game with a very high intensity and created early opportunities. Hannah Griggs was on fire from the first whistle and was rewarded early on when after a fine solo run, she slotted the ball under the keeper to put us 1-0 ahead.
We continued to press for a second but didn’t take advantage of some significant circle entries to extend our lead. We became stretched looking for a second and spaces were opening up through the middle of the field as a result. As Wimbledon exerted more pressure we failed to force turnover despite numerous opportunities and conceded the equaliser during the second quarter.
The remainder of the half saw opportunities at both ends but will be most remembered for Mel Clewlow clashing heads with the Wimbledon no 1 runner at a penalty corner which resulted in her leaving the game with concussion. This left us light in terms of personnel and defensive cover but captain Sophie Pinney played admirable switching to full back alongside the returning Madi Upton. Freya Sonnen, making her 1st team debut stepped up to play the rest of the game at LH and more than held her own in a very impressive debut performance.
With the score level at 1-1 and with Lucy Barnes taking two blows to the face either side of half time, we had to dig deep at times with a bare 11 to stay in the game. As the game wore on it looked like either side could snatch a late winner and we certainly had our chances with Upton’s effective aerials and powerful running from the midfield and forwards offering half chances to nick all 3 points.
It wasn’t to be and both sides walked away with a point. We finish the season away at Harleston Magpies and a chance to finish with 3 points. Well done to Griggs for her well deserved MOM performance.
