The 1st XI travelled to Southgate in good spirits, optimistic for an upset and looking to close the gap on the league leaders. Unfortunately, Southgate and maybe a higher power had other plans as before the game had even started, James Meakin was lost to a back injury during the warm up. This meant our already light squad of 14 was down to 13.
Despite the set back Canterbury started the game well and created a few good chances, but were unable to find the back of the net. Then around half way through the 1st quarter, former Canterbury player Teague managed to get a close(ish) range shot away which the rebound was fumbled in and Southgate took the lead.
A similar story occurred in the second quarter with Canterbury putting good pressure on Southgate. However, it was to no avail and Southgate again punished the good guys with a clinical finish to make it 2-0. Soon after the second goal Hamish Roberts seemed to disappear quite hastily off the pitch and into the Southgate Clubhouse. Maybe this is best left to one’s imagination.
The second half was hard fought and both sides did well to keep each other at bay. A handful of chances came but neither side could convert. As a result, the game ended 2-0 and Southgate extended their lead at the top of the table.
