An auspicious day for Tony Jones the skipper of The Friars – it was his 80th Birthday game and the stops were pulled out to get him to score a goal. But these heroic efforts were all to no avail despite numerous chances for him so he got Dud of The Day instead. The Friars are a ruthless bunch when necessary and always tell it how it is – mostly! Still he won’t mind as he has also been picked for England over 80s! Congratulations and a fitting 80th Birthday present.
Your reporter missed the first goal as he couldn’t find a place to park at Hawkenbury but rumour has it that one of the big units at the back scored his first goal for Canterbury at a short corner inside 2 minutes from push back. It was either Big Geoff, Big Mike or Big Alex. The scorer will be on Teamo or at the bottom of this report if it has been filed correctly!
2 more goals followed in quick succession from Father and Son duo Aikin & Aikin and the score at half time was 3-0 from a domiant Friars team.
Mark Lister summed up with the words at the break “that this game is about practising to be better players” – an interesting Thought for The Day for a Friar.
And so into the second half with the purpose of getting Jonesy’s celebration goal but despite valiant efforts it was Mark Lister getting the 4th goal and then another brace from Aikin & Aikin (almost sounding like a firm of dusty solicitors). Apparently this leaves them having scored 27 and 26 goals apiece this season in all competitions with the young 13 year old Arthur currently in the lead from his Dad. The competition is intense.
Young Tom Rogers played with great awareness throughout with some lovely long passes of great accuracy and deservedly was Man of the Match.
So a 6 goal win gives them 35 points in the league a total never achieved by them before in a season.
As there is no pic of Jonesy getting his non existent goal we’ll have to make do with a pic of his wonderfully themed Birthday Cake!
