Men’s Millers vs Herne Bay 2XI (Away) | 21 Jan 23

Lost 0 – 6

Not a good day for the Millers goal difference on the north Kent coast this week: (yet) another tale of missed opportunities, figuratively and metaphorically, against a well organised Herne Bay side. In the opening twenty minutes the Millers were well on top, using the full width of the pitch and playing with a flair and panache that belied their lowly league position.

A combination of determined goal-keeping and ongoing ‘shot-calibration’ from the forward line, meant that The Bay managed to stay on level terms. However, as has so often been the case this season, it was the home-side that eventually broke the deadlock, against the run of play, with a well-worked breakaway goal. With their dander up, they consolidated this with a further well taken deflection and an un-saveable reverse-stick shot, to take a healthy lead 3-0 into half time.

Again, the Millers started well in the second half, looking to pull something back early on. Again, though, the home keeper managed to deny all efforts on his goal. Throwing everything forward often left the visitors open to breakaway attacks and with the defence outnumbered at times, a fourth goal was eventually conceded midway through the half. The game became increasingly end-to-end and a little dicey, as the sun dropped and the pitch became somewhat slippery; and in their search for consolation goals, the visitors conceded a further two.

The Millers will relish a home game on the Polo ‘show pitch’ this Saturday, although perhaps not so much another encounter with the league’s second placed side! A goal-fest is almost certainly guaranteed, so why not come and support Trip Advisors top-rated Canterbury team as they push-back at 11:30am GMT (Gin and Millers Time).
