Canterbury started the match raring to go with a team made up of quite a young team, whereas Blackheath was quite an experienced team (as well as being quite high up in the league placing at 3rd). Canterbury knew that it was going to be a tough game but were ready for any challenge that was thrown at them.
It was a strong start for Canterbury with everyone giving 100%, however it was a tough battle in the midfield and defence for possession on both sides, going up and down the pitch. Our forwards continually made leads and kept the Blackheath defence on their toes. The first half saw Canterbury concede 1 goal from a quick cross into the D.
Towards the end of the first half Canterbury got a short corner which resulted in a lovely straight strike from Lizzy. Unfortunately it was saved by their keeper, clearing it out of the D with a strong kick. The first half ended with it being 0-1 to Blackheath. Half time involved a good team talk with Alex, EJ, Trudy and Lizzie giving great advice for the younger team players, helping them with structure and tackling. With our heads held high, the team took the advice and headed confidently into the second half.
The second half saw Canterbury battling hard for possession. Both teams drilling balls through sixteens, going up and down the pitch. A lovely ball from Munsy led to Sophie slipping it across to Martha on the left, who then drilled it into the D to find Hannah. Hannah was was so close to scoring but the ball got thrown out of the D again from a hefty kick by the keeper. The second half was a much better battle from Canterbury who had fire in their bellies hunting for a goal. Possession was evenly split between the two teams, but Blackheath made a quick turn over from a sixteen, crossed the ball into the D and scored once again making it 0-2.
With Canterbury still fighting strong they kept the ball out of the D for the rest of the game. It was a fast paced game with lots of action and short corners.
It was a brilliant performance from Canterbury’s defence with Alex, Jina, Munsy and Martha holding the fort for the most part of the game and Trudy commanding the back line. The match ended with a 0-2 loss with Man of the Match being Lizzie, who dominated the centre midfield, distributing lovely balls out to the wings.
It was a good battle with a lot of great takeaways which will help us develop and be ready for the next match.
