Off the back of their incredible first win of the season last week (and the hopes of keeping the winning streak alive) the Canterbury Ladies 2’s took to the roads for their first away game of the year against Oxted.
With many a new face joining the side, the girls were ready and raring to go as we set off on what would eventually be an incredibly long journey to Leeds Castle.
With closures on the M2 and traffic queuing for miles many cars took to the back roads and made their way out through Ashford. Unfortunately we lost Freya, Iona and Rachel at the first impossible hurdle of the dreaded Brenley Corner.
As Chirpy’s car of 4 made their way towards Ashford thinking they had beaten the traffic, they then had to face the next obstacle of the A2070 being shut as well. Claiming to be illiterate and ignoring the signs we tried to make it as far as possible until having to turn back and sit in the queues of traffic like everyone else.
As the meet time slowly passed and everyone’s ETA’s rolled in it read like a bad Shakespearean tragedy and the realisation we weren’t going to make it finally set in.
After an hour of trying to acquire a phone number because GMS was down (thank you Jo Martin we owe you a drink!) and using Emma as a middle man to communicate as she was the only player to make it there (thank god she came from London!) , the game was officially called off.
A big shout out to Lorna and Eleni who were on the M26 when the game was called off and continued up to Clacket Lane to grab some burgers! Hopefully next weeks home game against Epsom goes a bit smoother!
