Dear Diary,
We’re back. Three matches into the season, but who wants to be on time when there’s an entrance to make?
Today’s captain was Tilly. Despite pitch time and water cannons conspiring against us in the warm-up, we started strongly going against tradition, naturally. Half-backs PJ and Pip found space to drive up the line, ably assisted by attacking mids Sophie and Tilly.
Folkestone occasionally managed to break our press, but there was no fishing today, allowing Jina, Lydia and Taylor to step up and block the Folkestone attack.
Folkestone, frustrated, resorted to tackling with body, causing Rachel to arabesque through mid-air before dramatically slamming to the ground. Tragic.
The first-half goal came from Dave being in exactly the right place at exactly the right time to score a second-phase goal. Timing is everything, darling.
The level dropped slightly resulting in a penalty stroke. But while Folkestone may have thought they had their moment, GK Charlotte had other plans and saved the well-executed stroke. Denied.
Sue and Pippa worked tirelessly to cover the lines in the press. Their efforts paid off when Leah intercepted and slipped the ball to EJ, who, as she so often does, simply put it away. 2-0.
The game began to open up, moving from end to end, with Chloe, Taylor and Rachel running shuttles.
A left-slip penalty corner routine rebounded out to find EJ’s stick, and the ball didn’t seem to have much choice but to loop into the goal. 3-0.
EJ was reportedly heard saying she didn’t think there’d be a goal in the final few minutes, which was obviously just a little psychological warfare aimed at Folkestone.
Because, naturally, EJ completed her hat trick with a bit of one-on-one magic in the final two minutes. But while the headlines may belong to the hat-trick hero, we absolutely have to credit Jina for the vision to produce the assist from deep defence. Teamwork, darling. We love to see it. XOXO
