With enough coughs and headaches to stock a pharmacy Canterbury W4 were battling various illnesses: the juniors were bravely fighting off coughs and colds while some of the more experienced players recovering from… let’s call it “Friday Night.” The less said about that, the better.
Captain Alex had endured a chaotic week, making roughly 57 team changes thanks to availability mysteries and last‑minute surprises.
Special thanks to Immy and Paula, who stepped in at the very last minute, proving that not all heroes wear capes—some wear shin pads!
The Green & Whites piled on the pressure from the first whistle, creating a number of promising opportunities. Georgia was particularly lively down the left midfield channel, and Mariama with her trademark surging drives down the wing.
However, hockey can be a cruel game and completely against the run of play, Gravesend managed to score twice in quick succession. Canterbury kept creating chances, but it was the day their goalkeeper had clearly decided to have the game of her life.
The second half followed a similar pattern. Canterbury kept pressing, moving the ball well and building momentum, but once again Gravesend struck against the run of play to add a third goal.
However a well-worked short corner routine, Georgia finally got the reward Canterbury deserved, smashing home a brilliantly struck effort to reduce the deficit. Canterbury continued to push forward and the Green & Whites were rewarded with a second goal from Georgia to keep the pressure on. Unfortunately despite a run of good saves by Charlotte Gravesend managed to find one more goal of their own to seal a 4–2 victory.
Although not the result wanted, there were plenty of positives… Evie was outstanding playing totally out of position and making it look effortless. Mauve slotted in beautifully on her debut game and looked right at home. Well deserved MOM
